You've surely heard about bitmap and vector images now I want to illustrate the differences between the two types of images.
Bitmap images
![]()
Bitmap images are images that are obtained from scans of photos, import from digital cameras or webcams. The image generated is described by a grid of points, called pixels. Each pixel (picture element) are distributed on this grid like so many pieces that together form a kind of mosaic. Each pixel is assigned its own color. A key element when it comes to the resolution bitmap images. The resolution in fact affects the image quality as the grid size that is fixed up. Zooming or by viewing on devices with low resolution results in a degradation of the image that looks grainy and jagged.
Vector

Vector graphics are images that can be created with Flash using the drawing tools in the Tools panel. The image is described by lines and curves called vectors or paths. The report also tracks information about the color and position. Being generated by mathematical formulas, the tracks are not dependent on the resolution so you can zoom in, zoom out the image vector with no loss of quality. The objects contained in a vector image can be moved, resized, altered in form and changed color.
